16 Days: Day 7 – World AIDS Day

16dayslogo_fijian On Day 7 of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence, we mark World AIDS Day. Globally, around 35 million people are living with HIV but what is less frequently discussed is that HIV/AIDS is both a consequence and a risk factor for violence against women, as summed up by this recent briefing report from UNAIDS:

According to research cited in the report, women are 55% more likely to be HIV-positive if they have experienced intimate partner violence AND women are also more likely to experience intimate partner violence if they are known to be HIV-positive.

If you’re keen to learn more, also check out the WHO, UN Women and all of the articles in the reference list of the briefing report.
